The short version
Life with Wines 2 keeps your library on your device and in your own iCloud account. We do not require an account with us, and we do not sell your personal information. Data leaves your device only when you choose to use a feature that needs it, and each case is described below: anonymous barcode lookups, advertising handled by Google AdMob, iCloud sync of your own library, and — if you use the AI Sommelier — your question along with a list of the wines in your cellar.
Data stored on your device
Your wines, tasting notes, photos, cellar contents, shopping list, and favorites are stored locally on your iPhone or iPad. We have no access to them. Deleting an entry in the app removes it, and uninstalling the app removes all of its data. If you use iCloud (see below), a copy also syncs to your personal iCloud account.
iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud, your wines, tastings, notes, and cellar sync automatically to your other devices through Apple's iCloud. This data is stored in your own private iCloud account and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy; we cannot access it. If you turn off iCloud for the app in iOS Settings, your data stays only on the device.
Device features the app uses
Camera — used to scan wine barcodes and to take photos for your tastings. Images stay on your device.
Photo library — used when you choose an existing photo for a tasting. Photos stay on your device.
Contacts — used only when you choose friends to mention in a tasting note. The names you pick are saved with your note on your device and are not transmitted to us or anyone else.
Location — used only when you tap "Find me" to fill in where a tasting happened. The location is resolved on your device and saved with your note. It is not collected by us.
All of these are optional and each requires your permission the first time it is used.
Barcode lookups
When you scan a bottle's barcode, the app sends the barcode number — and nothing else — to product-identification services (productdb.org, eandata.com, and upcitemdb.com) to look up the wine. No personal information or device identifiers are included in these requests by the app.
AI Sommelier
When you ask the AI Sommelier a question, we send your question and a list of the wines in your cellar — the wine name, producer, varietal, region, vintage, your rating, and how many bottles you have — to our server, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API to generate a recommendation. We also send a random device identifier so we can count your free questions.
We do not send your photos, tasting notes, tasting locations, or contacts. We do not use this data for advertising, and we do not sell it. Anthropic does not use data submitted through its API to train its models. Your question and cellar list are not retained by us beyond producing your answer; we keep only a count of how many questions the device has asked.
The AI Sommelier is optional. If you never open it, none of this data is sent.
Advertising
The free version of the app shows banner ads served by Google AdMob. Google may collect device identifiers, approximate location inferred from IP address, and ad-interaction data to serve and measure ads, as described in Google's Privacy Policy and AdMob data practices. You can limit ad personalization in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security. Purchasing the "No Ads" in-app purchase removes advertising entirely.
Purchases
In-app purchases are processed entirely by Apple. We never see your payment details.
Sharing
Your data is only shared when you choose to share it — for example, emailing a favorite wine or your wine list. Sharing uses the standard iOS mail and share features, and the content goes only to the recipients you pick.
Children
Life with Wines 2 is about wine and is intended for users of legal drinking age. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If our data practices change, we will update this page and revise the effective date above.
